Grant puts a spring in gymnasts’ step

Members of Be Gymnastics in Eastbourne have a spring in their step following a sports grant from a power company.

The club secured a £250 Team Sport Award from UK Power Networks towards a new tumble track, where gymnasts can safely perfect flips, somersaults and other skills.

Phil Burke, a lead field engineer at UK Power Networks, is part of a team of parents who fundraise for the club all year round and he nominated the group for his employer’s award scheme.

Beth Winter, head gymnastics coach at Be Gymnastics, said: “We are delighted UK Power Networks has provided this funding, which is a great help to our community club.”

UK Power Networks runs the grant scheme to encourage staff at the local electricity network to volunteer in the community, support grassroots sport, promote healthy living, teamwork and develop sports opportunities. Such donations are becoming increasingly helpful to local sports clubs during the current ‘cost of living crisis’.

Phil, whose daughters Maddie, 15, Jazz, 11 and Gabby, six, train with Be Gymastics said: “The club brings children together and gives them a chance to progress through the levels.

“It felt good to be able to give something back by supporting the members and they appreciated it.”

Be Gymnastics, which has over 265 gymnasts, meets in Edison Road, Eastbourne, for recreational classes as well as competitive tumbling for all age groups.
