Local electricity engineer Craig Laffan has raised £1550 for charity on an 80-kilometre walk from London to Brighton.
He started the mammoth challenge on February 24, setting off from Tower Bridge at 5:35am and covered over 80 kilometres in 18 hours – arriving in Brighton just before midnight.
Craig lives in Snodland, Kent and works out of UK Power Networks’ Bengeworth Road depot near Brixton helping to maintain safe and reliable power supplies for the area..
He suffers from two heart conditions that he was diagnosed with when he was a teenager, resulting in having only two aortic valves instead of three, and a mild narrowing of the aorta on top of that.
Determined Craig was motivated to test himself mentally, saying that being “in the middle of nowhere, hours into it, I’d have no option but to carry on.”
When his family got wind of his challenge, they encouraged him to raise some money in the process, and the local hospice charity Ellenor came to mind.
Craig said: “I’m very much overwhelmed by the love, support and donations for this charity. When I eventually got to a Brighton sign, my legs were very tired and sore but all worth it; over 80 kilometres, over 80,000 steps, and 3,000 calories burned. This was done on six days' notice, with no headphones and also I have two heart conditions.”
The funds raised will go towards services that include an inpatient ward, Ellenor’s ‘Living Well’ programme, care home support teams, and a range of well-being services including therapies.
