Hullbridge Scouts get a handle on axe-throwing
Hullbridge Scouts Group has received some axe-ceptional tomahawk throwing kit following a £300 sports grant from UK Power Networks.
Dean Chaplin, field engineer based in Purfleet and leader at 1st Hullbridge Scout Group, applied to the company’s Team Sport Awards programme to purchase four Soft Tomahawk Range sets for the group.
As an instructor in tomahawk throwing, Dean said the tomahawks purchase is an inventive and safe way to bring the sport to younger persons – a sport rapidly growing in popularity around the UK.
Scout leader for 11 years, Dean has previously won grants for indoor uni-hockey sets for the group.
After running a throwing session for Beavers & Cubs of 1st Hullbridge, the group has also opened up the opportunity to all 11 Scout groups across Crouch Valley Scout District.
Dean said: “As a Scout group in a small village, obtaining any additional funding or grants means a lot. It enables us to purchase equipment that we wouldn’t normally be in a position to do so. As a Scout leader I feel everyone should have the opportunity to try whatever scouting can offer.
“Thank you to UK Power Networks. Tomahawk throwing is a growing sport and being able to purchase equipment that allows us to run this indoors and also for young sections is fantastic.
“Scout leaders are all volunteers and give up so much time of their free time to run meetings and develop our young people grow into confident, helpful and respected people.”
Becky Chaplin, 1st Hullbridge Group Scout leader, said: “I am truly thankful to UK Power Networks and their continued support to scouting. Receiving awards like this really does make a difference to so many young people.”
The company’s Team Sport Award scheme encourages staff to volunteer in the community, support grassroots sport, promote healthy living, teamwork and develop sports opportunities. Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. During 2023, 104 teams benefited from a share in £30,600 which proved a welcome boost during the 'cost of living’ crisis.
Hullbridge has Beavers, Cubs and Scouts groups which meet at Hullbridge Free Church.
