Ipswich netballers thrown funding boost by UK Power Networks
An Ipswich netball team with a long history has an exciting future after funding boost from a supportive local company.
Players at Christchurch Ladies Netball Club will benefit from a Team Sport award by UK Power Networks, a major employer in the town.
They received a £250 Team Sport Award from the company who distribute electricity across the East of England.
The money will go towards supporting community sport by buying new equipment and to fund additional coaching after employee Shammie Nyandebvu applied for the funds as her daughter, Naomi, is a member of the senior squad.
Shammie, a dispatcher at UK Power Networks, said: “Christchurch Ladies Netball Club has been going for over 70 years. It prides itself on being a club for all.
“They have a senior section which has six teams which compete competitively in the South Suffolk league and a junior section which have two sides competing in the junior league.
“My daughter Naomi has been with the club since she was a junior and is now playing in the seniors. Naomi thoroughly enjoys sports in general, and has a real passion for netball. She is part of a lovely team, all the girls get on really well. For me playing sport teaches skills that my daughter and others can take with them into their wider worlds of school and work.
“Beyond the obvious teamwork, we also learn to deal with adversity through loses or injuries, how to problem solve more effectively, as well as how to push themselves to improve their skills.
“I would like to make a special mention to all the Christchurch Ladies Netball coaches who volunteer their time to coach our girls helping them improve their netball skills.”
Sue Bailey, from Christchurch Ladies netball club, said: “We really appreciate UK Power Networks doing this for us.
“This lovely sum of money will be spent on purchasing new bibs and balls, enabling us to replace existing tired equipment. I know this will be appreciated by our players and we are grateful for the support.”
The Team Sport Award scheme encourages UK Power Networks staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sporting opportunities.
Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. During 2021, 77 teams benefitted to a combined sum of £19,250.
