Leaf litter pick for Kent bears
Leaf litter was turned into bedding for bears in Canterbury by volunteers from UK Power Networks.
Colleagues in the firm’s electricity connections team raked leaves which are dried to make comfy material for snoozing European brown bears at Wildwood Trust, a charity which protects and conserves British wildlife. The team also painted fencing on visitor walkways.
Staff took part through ‘Donate a Day’, a volunteer scheme giving all UK Power Networks’ employees two days each year to support projects in their local community.
Joe Weston, a design engineer at UK Power Networks, said: “Wildwood is a fantastic place that preserves native wildlife and offers all ages a great educational experience.
“The team enjoyed the day. Everyone worked hard and we hope the bears enjoy their new bedding. As a team of office workers, we felt sore the next day.”
Wildwood Trust has over 200 native animals, past and present, including bears, wolves, bison, deer, owls, foxes, red squirrels, wild boar, lynx, wild horses, badgers and beavers.
