Linespeople on cloud nine after award

A team of overhead linespeople are coming back down to earth, following an award recognising their top customer service.

Paul Boscombe, from Banstead, Surrey, and Matthew Clipperton, from Horsham, West Sussex, were recognised by their colleagues in UK Power Networks’ annual Living our Values awards as outstanding linespeople.

As part of their essential roles, they make new electricity connections, upgrade services for Electric Vehicles, fix network faults to reconnect power supplies, enable safe tree cutting round power lines and install safety shrouding for building works.

After receiving the award for ‘Linesperson Duo’, Paul said: “When they called out our names it took a few seconds to hit me we were being applauded by our peers, colleagues and directors. It was a ‘wow’ moment and I felt absolute euphoria.

“We strive every day to do the best job that we can do. It’s all about the customers because we need to be a trusted business. There is a lot of planning and work in our role, and we make adaptations on site using our skills to overcome problems that can arise. We always try to find a way forward.

“Sometimes we work in horrendous weather conditions to repair overhead lines and restore power supplies to customers. If it was my family without power, I would want that back on and repaired as soon as possible, so we do everything we can to resolve the fault quickly.”

Matthew added: “Initially I felt disbelief about winning this award but after the initial surprise there was a sense of contentment at being recognised for all the hard work we have done.

“I do love my job because it’s always different. I joined the company as an apprentice in 2014 and have enjoyed every minute because it’s hands on and working outdoors.

“I work well with Paul because we are both keen to make sure the job gets done and that our customers are happy with the work. I always try to improve my work and go further to make sure our customers are happy, that’s part of the joy of the job.”

Basil Scarsella, chief executive of UK Power Networks, said: “We take this opportunity to recognise the commitment and dedication of our employees, and the contribution they make to their local communities.

“The Living our Values annual celebration sees every part of our business represented for the different contributions they make to keeping the power flowing for the homes and businesses we serve. I congratulate Paul and Matthew on their success, and everyone nominated who is part of a high performing team.”
