Little St Mary’s little band of helpers
The Cambridge community has received a helping hand from UK Power Networks employees, who volunteered to help restore one of the city’s historic landmarks, Little St Mary's Church.
A valued part of the community since the 12th century, the church holds an important place in the city’s heritage. To support its upkeep, a team of volunteers from the electricity company used their Donate a Day scheme to restore sections of the church’s fencing - removing old paint, preparing surfaces and giving it a fresh new coat of paint.
The volunteering day brought together colleagues from different areas of the busines.UK Power Networks’ Donate a Day initiative gives employees two paid days a year to support causes they care about and make a lasting difference beyond their everyday roles.
Shubhankan Mukherjee, design engineer at UK Power Networks said:
“It was a privilege coordinating a Donate a Day volunteering initiative with Cambridge City Council. The council's representative orchestrated the arrangements with exemplary professionalism, and the on-site coordinator extended a gracious welcome, meticulously acquainting us with the restoration process. The transformation was remarkably gratifying, a truly commendable use of our Donate a Day for the preservation of a treasured community landmark.”
Eve Lucas, nature and communities ranger at Cambridge City Council said:
"We were happy to have the help of UK Power Networks’ employees. Their contribution has made a positive impact for both the parishioners of the church and the local community that couldn’t be completed without groups like yours."
