Look out, look up, stay safe on the farm
Reminding farmers and other agricultural workers to keep safe is this week’s focus for the UK’s biggest electricity distribution network operator during Farm Safety Week (July 20-24).
UK Power Networks which serves rural communities across the East of England and South East, as well as London, is backing the annual campaign by the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies) to share vital safety messages, encourage practical changes that can prevent accidents and protect lives. Against a background of 22 farm worker fatalities across Great Britain in 2025/26, the campaign’s theme this year is to ‘help start conversations because every action matters’.
UK Power Networks and the Energy Networks Association regularly champion safety with the key message to ‘Look Out, Look up’ and stay safe when working near overhead power lines which can carry 230 to 11,000/132,000 volts.
The company’s public safety team regularly speak at agricultural events and train young farmers to be aware and avoid the dangers, spreading the word on radio and social media too. In the first six months of 2026 they have already supplied 63,000 free safety resources including cab stickers, leaflets and posters to people in the farming community.
Public safety and education adviser Ros Forbes said: “It’s easy to lose concentration when working long hours, maybe out in the fields during a heatwave, so our advice is to always stay vigilant.
“To avoid accidents farm workers need to look up and around to see what electrical equipment is nearby. Knowing the reach of your machinery and highlighting the position of overhead lines and underground cables on your farm maps is a very simple way to save lives – including making sure any staff, third parties and visitors know too, before they start work.”
