Medway Anchorians awarded sports grant

Youngsters at Gillingham Anchorians Football Club have netted a grant towards new team kit.

The under-8s team is celebrating a £250 Team Sport Award from UK Power Networks after a nomination by Shane Pridmore, whose son Lennon, eight, plays for the team.

Shane, a first responder at UK Power Networks, who helps to keep electricity supplies flowing to homes and businesses in Kent, said: “Some of the kit was too big and some was too small, so we are pleased to be getting the players new kit. The parents thought it was brilliant.

“The kids are progressing and bonding as a team. We recently enjoyed a seven game unbeaten run, winning six and drawing one and when they do win it is brilliant to see them running around celebrating.

“Playing football brings them out of their shell, which is lovely to see.”

The team train on Saturdays at Gillingham Anchorians Football Club, Darland Avenue and home matches are played at the training ground on Sundays.

Charles Campey, Anchorians under-8s Pumas manager, said: “The sponsorship helped massively in funding the kit for us when we were struggling to find sponsors and the boys have loved every moment this season wearing the bright purple.”

The Team Sport Award scheme is run by UK Power Networks to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sports opportunities.
