New help for renewable generators delivers more green energy to homes
Renewable energy generators are gaining greater access to the electricity network, enabling more green energy to flow to homes and businesses, thanks to the UK Power Networks’ Distribution Network Operator opening up network availability.
Solar, wind, and battery projects now have more reliable access to the grid, allowing renewable energy projects to scale and operate more efficiently. This is driven by UK Power Networks DSO’s flexible connections and active network management, which deliver 98% network availability and have reduced *curtailment - to just 2% - down from 8.7% two years ago.
Generators can export more power, maximise revenue, and contribute more low-carbon energy to the UK’s electricity system because of this industry-leading level of network availability. Already, 49 Distributed Energy Resource (DER) generators, with a combined capacity of 500 MW (0.5 GW), are benefiting from greater grid access by collaborating with UK Power Networks DSO.
The UK Power Networks DSO’s Operations team drives this success by acting as operational partners to renewable energy generators - such as wind and solar generators. After generators connect to the network, the team actively monitor energy flows in real time to maximise renewable energy exports and minimise curtailment - helping renewable generators earn more revenue while getting more green energy to homes and businesses.
Sotiris Georgiopoulos, director of DSO at UK Power Networks, said: "As a DSO, it’s our responsibility to help our generation customers deliver more green energy efficiently and support the UK’s transition to Net Zero. By driving down curtailment and ensuring generators have more opportunities to export energy on to the grid, we are bringing more energy where people need it.”
“This project is a great example of how we are enabling smarter network management, saving customers £91 million in our first year as a DSO, and getting an additional 160 GWh of renewable power into homes and businesses by unlocking access to network for low-carbon generation."
Christopher Goodson, senior engineer at Lightsourcebp, said: “Flexible connections with 98% availability are fantastic news. They allow us to confidently deliver green energy to the network, even during restricted access, helping reduce costs for consumers and advancing the journey to net zero. It is truly impressive to see the impact of these changes in quantifiable terms, and it sets a positive precedent for the rest of the industry.”
*Curtailment is short, managed limits on energy export which have been agreed with the energy generator.
