Overhead line duo voted the tops

Two power line workers in Kent were ‘overwhelmed’ to win a top award for customer service.

Dan Murrell, 24 from Halling, Rochester, and Dale Carroll, 35, from Ditton, Aylesford, were named top ‘Line Duo’ in UK Power Networks’ annual Living Our Values awards in London, which recognises unsung heroes who work outdoors in all weathers to keep power flowing.

Colleagues said: “Dale and Dan are a great customer-focused frontline team. They are always very thorough and willing to go the extra mile to ensure the customer gets the service they deserve.”

After qualifying last year, Dan formed a winning working partnership with Dale, an experienced linesperson who describes Dan as a ‘sponge’, soaking up the skills of a life working on the lines.

Dan said: “I found it hard receiving the award because I haven’t been here that long and everyone I work with is good at their job, works hard and deserves this recognition. I’m proud to accept this from my peers, it’s so nice they appreciate the work we do.”

Dale added: “We get job satisfaction from getting the power back on. I enjoy my job and wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s nice to be appreciated, but overwhelming. We have a good team, and share the same ethos, so to be singled out is a privilege.

“When we’re repairing a fault on the network, we want to get customers back on supply, so there is that desire to get the job done and when you achieve it there is a feeling of job satisfaction. It’s our duty.”

Dan agrees it’s ‘important work’ and seeing families together indoors when they are working out in the wind, rain and cold can be tough, but it’s these times when they band together to support each other more than ever and take pride in their role.

The pair work across a wide geographical area, from Orpington, Dartford and Higham and Tunbridge Wells in Kent, to sometimes working as far south as the coast of Eastbourne in East Sussex. They work on repairs, maintenance and upgrades, as well as new connections.
