Power award makes showjumpers jump for joy

A group of young Norfolk showjumpers are jumping for joy after being given a cash award towards new equipment.

Members of Hot to Trot School of Equitation based in the village of Bunwell, have been given a £250 Team Sports Award by UK Power Networks, which will go towards buying new jump equipment for future events. The riding school caters for all ages from six to over 60, but also has members who actively take part in exciting showjumping events throughout Norfolk and Suffolk.

The money was awarded to the school through Darren Styles who is a field engineer based in Diss. Darren’s daughter, Cerys, is 18 and takes part in as many events as possible. Darren said:
“We attend as many events as time allows. On event days my duties range from helping to load and unload the ponies, building the jump course and putting back the poles that come down during jumps. I’m often found on the end of a shovel clearing the stables or lorry and anything else that needs to be done!”

The scheme encourages UK Power Networks’ staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sporting opportunities.

Darren said that the award was a real boost and a great idea as it benefits small clubs. Spending on better equipment will attract more people to take part and help the riders aim for best in class.

Hannah Wright, owner of the school, said: “We really appreciate this donation from UK Power Networks. It is refreshing to see a utility company supporting small local businesses like our riding stables. This funding will be used to purchase more jumping equipment for children to learn new skills while riding.”

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the Team Sport Award scheme was set up. During 2021, 77 teams were given awards adding up to a combined sum of £19,250.
