Power company celebrates 75 years of the Commonwealth
A new book celebrating the Commonwealth’s 75th anniversary features UK Power Networks’ role in the transition to Net Zero, and training aspirational young people for its workforce.
The hardback album ‘The Commonwealth at 75’ brings together stories of best practice from 56 countries and features an interview with Basil Scarsella, CEO of the country’s largest electricity distributor. It was launched at a prestigious event in Westminster Abbey last night (October 9).
UK Power Networks’ electricity networks in London, the East and South East serve 20 million people through 190,000km of overground and underground electricity cables which reliably deliver electricity to some 8.5 million homes and businesses.
In an extensive interview included in the book, Basil says he believes that the UK can be a leader in the transition to Net Zero and UK Power Networks plays a leading role in this. The transition to low carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and heating systems, means demand for electricity is expected to double over the next 25 years, powered by renewable energy.
“We are doing all we can to make low carbon technology and clean energy within everyone’s reach, regardless of their circumstances,” said Basil.
Of the 6,000-strong employee base, 4,000 people deal directly with supplying safe and reliable power supplies. The company’s goal is to train young people drawn from the communities that it serves, to keep power flowing for communities.
“We want to build a family of employees and customers, just as the Commonwealth is a family of nations,” said Basil.
