Power team scale new heights for Macmillan

Sussex power workers climbed Yr Wyddfa and held a bake sale, raising more than £1,800 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team, based at Hazelwick Avenue in Crawley, organised the sponsored hike and office cake sale for the charity, which supports people living with cancer.

Six UK Power Networks finance employees and a family member climbed Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, which is the highest mountain in Wales at 1,085-metres. The group followed the Miners’ Track, tackling a steep, rocky ascent near the summit, and raised £1,484 to support people living with cancer.

Team leader James Hamilton said: “It was the first time I had climbed a mountain; it was a fantastic experience and a great team event. We smiled throughout the hike and were elated to reach the summit. There were high-fives all round, and everyone felt relieved.

“Macmillan supported my father after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Their help was invaluable, which is why I wanted to support them. Anyone who has received their support will know how good they are, but people do not always realise they can ask for help.”

Jan Forrest, head of relationship fundraising at Macmillan, said: “Taking on such a huge challenge to support people living with cancer is a fantastic achievement, and we’re incredibly grateful to the team at UK Power Networks for their determination and commitment. Climbing Yr Wyddfa is no small feat, and raising £1,800 along the way will help us continue to be there for people living with cancer when they need us most. A huge thank you to everyone involved for going the extra mile for Macmillan.”

The fundraising challenge was supported through Donate a Day, a scheme giving every employee two days each year to volunteer or raise money for their local communities.

In Crawley, colleagues added more than £377 to the total through an office bake sale.
