Power walkers smash charity fundraising target
Colleagues from electricity firm UK Power Networks came together to tackle a 28-mile hike to raise funds for a children and young people’s charity.
Ten employees who help deliver power to communities across the East of England, South East and London, completed the Tunbridge Wells Circular Walk raising £2,100 – four times as much as their original target!
The walk took them through the undulating countryside of the High Weald, past climbing hotspot Harrison’s Rocks, and Groombridge Place which featured in the 2005 film Pride of Prejudice starring Keira Knightley.
UK Power Networks gives employees two paid days every year to volunteer for their community. The company also donated £500 to boost the funds, and a Dress Down day at the company’s Ipswich contact centre previously raised another £364.
The team from Ipswich and Crawley are supporting Winston’s Wish which provides support and resources for grieving children. Estimates suggest that every day more than 100 children in the UK are bereaved of a parent and that figure doesn’t include young people are coping with the death of a sibling, grandparent, friend, or another significant individual in their lives. The charity also provides support to professionals working in education, healthcare, and community settings to assist bereaved children and relies on voluntary donations for 90% of its income. Louisa Hancox, philanthropy and partnerships manager at Winston’s Wish, said: “We are thrilled with the efforts of the team at UK Power Networks and are so thankful for everyone involved in the walk. Their commitment to raising funds and awareness helps to ensure that our services remain open and accessible to grieving children, young people, and the adults who care for them during the most difficult times. “We are proud to have such devoted supporters like UK Power Networks, standing by our side in our mission to ensure no child has to face grief alone. Together, we’re working towards a society where every child and young person receives the help that they need when their worlds have been turned upside down by grief.”
Walk organiser Sam Duncan said: “The whole team agreed it would be an excellent cause to raise money for, but also raise the profile of, so that more people affected by family bereavement know they can provide support.”
The walk took just under 15 hours across two days and the toughest stage was a downpour which made the terrain difficult, but Sam said: “It really brought the team together to motivate and support each other.”
