Power worker’s badge booster for Brownies

Girls at 6th Strood Brownies are celebrating a grant to learn new skills and earn new badges.

The unit was awarded a £250 Team Sport Award by UK Power Networks to buy new equipment helping them to learn new skills and hobbies, get creative and enjoy more outdoor adventures.

The equipment will help the girls to earn more interest badges related to topics they want to discover such as bushcraft, camping, first aid, photography and navigation.

Stacey Ridley, an agent in the groundworks team at UK Power Networks, secured the grant for the pack where his daughter Daisy, who is nine, is a proud ‘Sixer’ leading her pack.

Stacey said: “The money is going towards crafts and activities to help the girls earn their badges.

“They get enjoyment, satisfaction and learn different life skills. It gives them a chance to bond with other children. Daisy loves Brownies and enjoys the responsibility of helping the younger ones.

“UK Power Networks is doing a great thing by running this scheme and £250 will go a long way. My daughter was delighted and the Brownies were chuffed to be awarded a grant.”

Ann Potter, Girlguiding Unit Leader at 6th Strood Brownies, said: “The grant will enable us to offer a diverse number of experiences to all to gain interest badges, build skills at different levels and enjoy unit meeting activities, all needed for the Brownies to gain their theme awards that are part of the Girlguiding programme across all sections.”

The pack meet on Tuesday nights at St Francis Church, Galahad Avenue, Rochester.

UK Power Networks recently announced it was supporting the Cub Scouts’ ‘Environment Conservation’ badge with fresh new activities designed to give skills for life. The firm provides practical tips on how to save money and be more energy efficient, including by giving youngsters a chance to create their own ideal ‘future city’ to help earn the badge.

The company’s Team Sport Award scheme encourages staff to volunteer in the community, support grassroots sport, promote healthy living, teamwork and develop sports opportunities. In 2022, 86 teams benefited from a share in £21,500.
