Power workers lend a helping hand during ‘fantastic day’

Enthusiastic power workers spent a day at a South London charity giving back to people with disabilities.

Six employees from UK Power Networks took part in the company’s Donate a Day scheme to help The AHOY Centre near Greenwich which specialises in integrated, water-based activities for disabled people.

As part of their work, the hardworking group painted, oiled balcony decking and helped maintain the rowing boats.

The team carried out the work using their company’s Donate a Day scheme which gives the 5,500 staff two paid days each year to volunteer in their local communities.

Jonny Grady, senior fundraiser at The AHOY Centre, said: “Volunteering is a key element in supporting our work.

“It's thanks to companies like UK Power Networks who see the value in giving back to their communities by giving time and resource to complete tasks that would otherwise be overlooked. We’re so grateful to welcome such a hard-working and passionate team to our riverside facility.”

Graham Mace, project manager at UK Power Networks, said: “It was a fantastic day and thoroughly rewarding day with the weather being really kind to us too. The staff at AHOY were really welcoming, friendly and appreciative of the work we completed. We got a lot of things sorted to make the place ready for the winter elements.”

“They also provided us a very tasty lunch, which we sat and ate with the people this charity is aiming to support. That gave the things we were doing extra meaning, by allowing us to see what this charity does first hand.”

So far this year more than 350 UK Power Networks employees have completed volunteering time under the Donate a Day scheme.
