Record-breaking run in PPE as employees raise thousands for charity

Runners from UK Power Networks completed the London Marathon yesterday, raising more than £10,000 for charity.

One of the company’s directors, Sotiris Georgiopoulos, set a new world record as the ‘fastest male electrical engineer’. He had to beat a time of 4.30 and managed 4.21 while wearing protective gear including a hard hat, flame-retardant boiler suit and carrying a volt meter.

Sotiris from East Finchley achieved the world record in tribute to the company’s 3,500 colleagues who wear PPE daily, putting safety first while working with electricity. He was also trialling a new design of kit and raised £4,450 for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award which the company regularly supports.

He said: “Running in full PPE was one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever taken on. Every mile felt harder, hotter and heavier than the last but everyone’s support kept me going. To come out the other side having raised over £4,000 and set a world record is completely surreal. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who supported me.”

Other UK Power Networks employees raised money for various charities:

Victoria Beresford, who is based in the Ipswich office, was running in memory of her dad who died of cancer and raised £3,440 for the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Rosie Waters, also from Ipswich raised £2,400 for SENSE with a time of 4.58.

Steve Nguyen who is based in East London completed his first London Marathon in 3.07.

Jack Powell from the Hemel Hempstead area was also a first-timer and completed it in 3.29.
