Sports grant kicks off football season at new Leighton Buzzard ladies club

One of the newest ladies’ football teams in Bedfordshire will benefit from a £300 grant for new equipment, following a Team Sport Award from UK Power Networks.

The Team Sport Awards scheme is run by UK Power Networks to support staff volunteering in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing grassroots sports opportunities.

Zena White, a field engineer who lives in Leighton Buzzard and works at UK Power Networks’ Borehamwood office, applied for the grant for the first time.

The grants donate money to sports causes, around London, the East and the South East of the United Kingdom.

Woodside FC is one of the oldest, most established, and largest football clubs in Leighton Buzzard and surrounding areas. Established in 1975, the club hosts over 15 teams ranging from under-6 Colts through to adults including girls and ladies units.

The ladies’ team started last year, joining with fellow local club Stoke Hammond, playing friendlies across Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Ages on the team range from 18 to the oldest player in her mid-40s.

The team trains at Van Dyke Upper School on Thursday evenings from 7pm to 8pm.

Zena said: “We’re pleased to get this award because it shows UK Power Networks’ commitment to employee engagement. You’re not only supported by your work but can also give it back to the community.

“The range of benefits you can apply for, adds cherries on the cake to working here. We are a team of around 30 and to get that fulfilment of the socialising and doing a physical activity is awesome. To say the company has helped, is something that is absolutely amazing.”

Jamie Thorpe, vice chairman at Leighton Woodside FC, said: “Our mantra of Inspire/Develop/Compete is much more than word, our football philosophy is inclusive and engages the hearts and minds of our players.

“We are an FA Standard Chartered and highly respected club. We have strong community connections with players, parents, supporters and all those associated with the club. We are not profit making, and our continued existence relies heavily on the generous contributions of individuals and organisations like UK Power Networks. As such we are all massively grateful.”
