Substation gets makeover inside and out
UK Power Networks has refurbished Finsbury Market substation in central London with a nearly half-a-million-pound investment.
The electrical infrastructure near Liverpool Street will see a pair of transformers improved – even adding a lick of paint.
This essential upgrade happened in tandem with the perimeter of the compound becoming the canvas for street art.
The electricity firm invested £483,000 giving existing equipment a new lease of life.
The upgrade will improve reliability and strengthen power supplies for the busy area for years to come.
On top of UK Power Networks’ work inside the compound, the outside has become a canvas for creatives at Global Street Art and street artist Nelio Riga used the wall as the backdrop for their latest project.
Global Street Art is Europe’s leading producers of hand-painted advertising and public art murals and brought the red-brick wall to life.
UK Power Networks project manager, Chanelle Mistry, said: “This investment is giving vital infrastructure a new lease of life. By refurbishing and maintaining the two transformers, we are helping to strengthen the local electricity network and improve reliability for the many businesses and residents who depend on it every day and into the future. While we've been upgrading the equipment behind the scenes, we're also pleased to see the outside of the site transformed through an exciting new piece of artwork that will help brighten the local area.”
Dr Lee Bofkin, co-founder of Global Street Art, said: "It has been a pleasure working with UK Power Networks and Broadgate Quarter on such an important and prominent site helps us move towards our ongoing mission to 'live in painted cities'. We'd like to thank UK Power Networks and everyone else involved for their dedication to this ambitious project. I frequently walk past the walls, as do so many people, and it is great to see the project so well received."
