UK Power Networks teams up with ‘Felix’ to help feed London

To mark national Volunteers Week, a team from UK Power Networks spent a day helping sort and prepare surplus food at Felix’s South London depot.

Working at one of the charity’s distribution sites, five employees supported the movement of food on to the community organisations and schools that rely on it, playing a practical role in helping more meals reach people across London.

The Felix charity was recently founded following the merger of The Felix Project and FareShare and its vision is a UK where no good food is wasted and no one goes hungry. It rescues good-to-eat surplus food, that cannot be sold and would otherwise go to waste from across the food industry. That food is repurposed and shared to support more than 8,000 community organisations across the UK, reaching over 1.5 million people.

Last year Felix rescued over 66,000 tonnes of food, enough to provide almost 150 million meals. The food it rescues helps feed children and families, older people, and others facing food insecurity while also reducing waste and preventing unnecessary carbon emissions.

Christina Tsechelidou, power systems development engineer at UK Power Networks said: “I’m really proud to have volunteered with Felix and to play a small part in helping get good food to people who need it. It was a hands-on day and you quickly get to see the difference you’re making. It also brought our London-based team together in a positive way, supporting our local communities in a practical and meaningful way.”

Paul Amadi, executive director of income generation at Felix said: “We’re so grateful to the team from UK Power Networks for giving their time to support our work. Felix could not do what it does without so many incredible volunteers Their help means more surplus food can be sorted and redistributed quickly, reaching the community organisations and schools that rely on us. Partnerships like this make a real difference in tackling food waste.”

The volunteering day formed part of UK Power Networks’ Donate a Day scheme, which gives employees two paid days a year to support causes in their local communities.
