Watt a journey! Fleet administrator powers through 40 years

A Chatham woman who has kept Kent’s electricity staff on the road has celebrated 40 years’ service with her employer, UK Power Networks.

The company which keeps electricity flowing to 20 million people across the South East, London and East of England invites employees who have given 40 years of continuous service to join a special 40-plus club.

Transport fleet administrator, Lynne Dennis, 62, from Walderslade Woods, Kent, was 23 when she started work in July 1985 as a kitchen assistant for the former SEEBOARD in Chatham, helping prepare hot meals for 150 staff.

She progressed into a clerical engineering role, organising maintenance, repairs and tree cutting – while forming lifelong friendships. A move to the transport department followed in 1989, where she remained working in a variety of different roles, including booking vehicle service and MOTs, managing vehicle tax for thousands of vehicles, and coordinating temporary vehicles for field staff.

Lynne said: “I’m so grateful for my 40 years with the company and for the opportunities to move into different roles within the company and work with nice people.

“I received my forty-year certificate from Mr Basil himself! The company thanked us for our long service at a celebratory meal, which was a lovely evening, despite my initial apprehension. I feel proud of the job I’ve done and grateful for my friendships and memories.

“UK Power Networks does well and hopefully that will continue. It’s a family-orientated company and I think Basil is really good for the company. My advice to those starting their careers is to work hard, listen and learn, stay safe and they’ll do well.”

Lynne is among 15 staff to join the company’s ‘40+ Club’ this year, which currently has more than 300 members celebrating between 40 and 61 years of service.

Basil Scarsella, chief executive of UK Power Networks, said: “I look forward to this event every year as a way to spend time with our longest-serving employees, who have served UK Power Networks and its legacy companies tirelessly for decades. I’m delighted that so many people choose to stay with us for their whole career and it is a pleasure to hold this special celebration to recognise their commitment to keeping the lights on for the millions of customers we serve.”

Lynne is retiring next month and plans to see more of her dad, her grandchildren and partner.
