Cambridge East Grid

Work is presently underway to construct a new electricity substation for Cambridge East, marking a significant upgrade to the local power infrastructure. This facility is designed to enhance the capacity and reliability of the electricity network across the South Cambridge area, supporting both current demand and future growth. ‘The substation itself will not generate electricity. It’s primary function will be to step down the voltage from 132,000 volts to 33,000 volts, enabling power to be distributed locally to homes and business.

The site for this new development is strategically located to the west of Cherry Hinton Road and north of the Babraham Park and Ride facility. The substation is a key part of wider investment in the area’s energy infrastructure, helping to accommodate emerging technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, as well as supporting major developments in the surrounding area. We anticipate the new Cambridge East substation will be fully operational by spring 2027, providing long-term benefits for local residents and businesses.

The proposal underwent stakeholder and public consultation by Greater Cambridge Planning Service, with planning approved in December 2024. An independent ecology survey was completed before work began, and new trees will be planted after project completion to support biodiversity.
