As part of our continued commitment to supporting Cambridge’s growth, UK Power Networks is proactively upgrading and expanding the electricity network to meet the city’s increasing energy needs. These enhancements include the installation of advanced electricity cables across Cambridge and the development of new substations on the city’s outskirts.

In Cambridge, we need to access more power capacity to meet the growing demand that is coming onto the network, through the construction of 3 new substations and new underground cables.

These substations do not generate electrical power. Electricity is generated at power stations, or wind and solar farms. Instead, an electricity substation is a collection of equipment, including transformers and switchgear, which reduce the voltage of electrical power down to voltages that can be used by homes and businesses. The new cable routes will link the substations and help distribute power throughout Cambridge.

Did you know?
  • By 2040, there could be 36 million electric vehicles on UK roads.
  • Just one single 50kW 'rapid EV charger' can have the same network impact as a block of 25 new flats.
  • The typical household currently has an average demand of around 2-3kVA. That is expected to increase to an average demand of approximately 10kVA as we shift to electric vehicles and other low carbon technologies.
  • Nations Grid predicts that to meet Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050 at least 40GW of new electrical capacity will need to be connected to the grid in the next 10 years. That is the equivalent of adding power from 12 nuclear power stations to the national grid.
Who we are

UK Power Networks is the electricity distribution network operator for London, the South East and the East of England. We own and maintain the cables, substations and power lines that deliver electricity from the national transmission network to homes, businesses and essential services, keeping power flowing safely and reliably every day.
