Fulbourn to Sawston cable route
We are currently undertaking a significant upgrade of the underground electricity network running between Fulbourn and Sawston. This initiative is designed to ensure the ongoing reliability and resilience of power supplies for the surrounding communities, both now and into the future. In addition to reinforcing the existing infrastructure, the project will enable new connections to be made to the network, thereby supporting anticipated growth and development within the area.
The cable upgrade stretches from our Fulbourn Grid Substation, conveniently situated near Fulbourn Tesco, all the way to the Sawston Primary Substation, located to the west of Sawston just off the A1301. This strategic route has been chosen to maximise coverage and enhance the robustness of the local electricity network.

As part of the works, we are installing three brand new 33kV circuits, which will provide additional capacity and flexibility for electricity distribution. The project is being delivered in partnership with Kier and M&M Contractors, working on behalf of UK Power Networks. These new cables will be installed within the carriageway and we are coordinating closely with Cambridgeshire County Council, which acts as the local highways authority. This collaborative approach aims to reduce the impact of roadworks, maintain traffic flow wherever possible, and safeguard essential services throughout the duration of the project.
Once completed, this upgraded cable route will contribute to a stronger and more future-proof electricity supply for the region, supporting both existing needs and the adoption of emerging technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, in line with broader improvements to South Cambridge's energy infrastructure.
