Blue Light

Blue Light aims to support the decarbonisation of emergency services in the UK by developing and implementing innovative tools and strategies to facilitate their decarbonisation plans. The project is relevant to all blue-light emergency services organisations (24 in total) in UK Power Networks’ three licence areas.

Key deliverables

  • Produce engagement reports for Ambulance, Fire, and Police
  • Validate user wireframes and develop solution specification

Target outcomes

  • Streamline connections process and reduce resource effort by minimising re-applications and re-quoting
  • Improve planning for emergency service fleet electrification
  • Support Net Zero transition for emergency services

Measures of success

  • Engage with at least two police, fire, and ambulance organisations to gather data on their decarbonisation plans and how the electricity distribution infrastructure should look for these targets to be met
  • Improve the percentage of successful new connection or existing connection upgrade applications that are made by emergency services organisations
  • Improve network planning and decision making by using the improved understanding of emergency services decarbonisation plans to make more efficient reinforcements

Stakeholder Engagement

Significant and wide engagement with Emergency Services stakeholders, such as Police force Commercial Services and London Fire Brigade Carbon Reduction Officers, to test and validate initial plans. Extensive engagement with Emergency Services and project partners from NHS organisations, Police, Ambulance and Fire Services to research and design the solution, testing tool features with each to ensure they would meet needs effectively. Further rounds of engagement with these project partners to collect data and enable site design standardisation. Data was shared with us from partners, which was used to determine infrastructure design.

Trinity

Working with GE, PNDC and SSEN to explore the use of control room simulations to improve network resilience. The project will look to leverage existing approaches used in the generation and transmission sectors, applying the unique operational and commercial scenarios applicable to distribution environments. This project is funded through the Strategic Innovation Fund, which works in three phases. If successful for a subsequent phase then the end date and other details will change.
