1Streetworks

1Streetworks is a browser-based traffic management planning tool that brings together Street Manager, local authority and geospatial data to generate safe, consistent, Red Book-compliant plans in 1–3 minutes for around 85% of cases. It helps UK Power Networks deliver planned, customer-facing and reactive works more efficiently while reducing manual effort and disruption.

Key deliverables

  • Browser-based geospatial traffic management planning tool
  • Automated generation of safe, consistent, Red Book-compliant traffic management plans
  • Single interface bringing together Street Manager, local authority and mapping data
  • Capability to create both individual and bulk plans for different streetworks scenarios
  • Training, rollout and feedback-led improvement to support wider UK Power Networks adoption

Target outcomes

  • Reduced traffic management planning time from a multi-day, multi-person process to minutes
  • Improved consistency and compliance of traffic management plans
  • Fewer road closures and less disruption for customers, road users and local communities
  • Faster delivery and better coordination of planned, customer-facing and reactive works
  • Better visibility of surrounding works and opportunities for collaboration with other utilities and partners

Measures of success

  • Trial evidence of a reduction in road closures in areas using the tool (of around 38%)
  • Traffic management plans produced in minutes rather than days
  • Growth in trained and active users across relevant teams
  • Evidence that generated plans are safe, consistent and Red Book-compliant
  • Reduced manual touchpoints and improved coordination across planning and delivery

Stakeholder Engagement

Led by Laurence AlShaar with engagement across street works, planning and operational teams.

Trials delivered with Surrey and Kent local authorities; Kent considered the approach best practice after trial.

Ongoing engagement with users through training, refresh sessions and business roadshows.

Collaboration with 1Spatial / 1Streetworks to refine the tool through rollout feedback.

Engagement with teams involved in planned, reactive and customer-facing works that rely on traffic management planning.

Powercast 2.0

Powercast 2.0 is a NIA-funded discovery project exploring how UK Power Networks’ Live Fault API can be used by external partners to improve operational response to outages and proactively inform shared customers. The project engaged eight organisations across five sectors, validated high-value use cases, and produced a delivery roadmap for potential follow-on implementation through Powercast 3.0.
